Cosmetic Breast Surgery, Past and Present
Aesthetics of the breast is an elusive concept. Our society, as well as many others, has defined certain ideals and standards of attractiveness for breast appearance. Ultimately, however, the “ideal breast” for each prospective patient exists in her own mind. Many women feel their bodies are not “right” unless their breasts are balanced and symmetrical.

Implant Styles (Shapes)
Breast implants differ in shape for a number of reasons. There is no “one-size-fits-all” rule nor is there “one shape fits all” rule in breast augmentation and reconstruction. For an example, Mentor and Inamed, the two leading breast implant manufacturers, offer smooth implants, textured implants, implants with different profiles (projection), volume adjustable implants, saline filled, silicone gel filled, and double-lumen saline/gel implants.

Silicone versus Saline Implants
I am seeing more patients in my cosmetic breast surgery practice who are inquiring about silicone breast implants. Silicone implants were popular in the 1970s and 1980s. The former generation of silicone implants had a more “runny” or less viscous gel and the implant shell was thinner.

Silicone Gel Breast Implants are FDA Approved

24 Hour Recovery Program
The traditional approach to Breast Augmentation was to have patients take one week off from normal activities, such as work and child-care, and then gradually resume their lives. However, this window of time lost was significant, and the necessity of “down time” caused many women to postpone or even not consider breast augmentation because their lives were simply too busy.
